Severe flooding in South Africa is threatening Elephants Alive's operations, infrastructure, and ability to respond on the ground. After nearly 30 years of conservation work, our newly completed headquarters and surrounding access infrastructure, finished in 2023 after years of effort, are now at risk due to extreme flooding. This project will support urgent flood repairs so our work can continue.
Elephants Alive has worked to protect elephants and support coexistence for nearly 30 years. After years of effort, our permanent headquarters infrastructure was finally completed in 2023. Severe flooding has now damaged offices, furnishings, and access roads, with buildings leaking and vehicles struggling to reach field sites. This flooding threatens our operations, staff safety, and ability to continue vital conservation work.
This project will provide urgent flood relief to stabilise Elephants Alive's operations. Funds will support repairs to flood-damaged furniture and office items, restore access roads, cover vehicle tyres and fuel costs, and address essential building repairs caused by leaks and water damage. These actions will allow our team to keep working safely and effectively during ongoing extreme weather.
Repairing flood damage now will protect nearly two decades of conservation work and secure the infrastructure needed for the future. Strengthening our facilities and access against flooding will help Elephants Alive remain operational as climate extremes increase, ensuring continued support for elephants, communities, and landscapes for years to come.
