It is possible to reduce the sedentary lifestyle in the children of El Manglito, reduce the expenses of transportation to school and build a consciousness for better ways to travel around the city. The children of El Manglito can aspire to have a healthier and sustainable lifestyle by cycling to school, develop a road culture of the use of the street, generate new skills, explore their city in a safe environment, and improve the road safety of their own neighborhood by tactical urbanism.
Car dependence is a big problem for El Manglito community. Even though the school were El Manglito Kids attend is within a walking or a bikeable distance, parents spend a big amount of money on gasoline for short journeys, mostly because there are no safe road conditions for walking and the temperature of La Paz can be as high as 115F.
Bicycle use can be a tool for empowerment. At El Manglito Kids - Wheels for Freedom we believe that bike use can help to save money, time and improve children's health. Through regular use of bicycle, the children of El Manglito will be able to experience a sustainable way of transportation on a regular basis, so in the future they will be less likely to rely on pollutant vehicles.
- Donate 10 bicycles to kids from El Manglito. - The project will impact over 30 families allowing their kids to ride a bicycle and fix a bicycle. - Organize 20 bike rides from El Manglito to school. - Organize 6 recreational bike rides around La Paz. - Perform over 15 safety streets workshops for El Manglito Kids to expand their awareness onto sustainable urban development. - Teach as many kid, and parents, as we can to learn how to ride a bicycle, for a full year.
