Teach literacy to bring new life opportunities to indigenous Guatemalan children at the El Hato Literacy Center
El Hato is a largely Mayan community near Antigua, Guatemala. Unfortunately, school and literacy resources for this community are severely underfunded. Literacy rates are very low, especially among rural indigenous women.
The El Hato Literacy Center provides an array of free literacy services to the community. These include: before and after school tutoring for students, a library with computers and Internet access, and a vacation camp to provide literacy support when school is out.
The long term goal for the community is to have improved literacy rates once children have left school. This improvement will provide better lifelong opportunities for these children as they transition into adulthood and provide for themselves and their families.
