This project will support the education of 40 needy children in Kilifi County in public (government) primary schools by paying their school levies and learning materials and school uniforms. Kilifi County is one of the poorest counties in Kenya, with one of the highest rates of illiteracy. Most families cannot afford to educate their children because primary school education in Kenya is not totally free. There are several hidden costs that make education out of reach for most poor families.
The government of Kenya introduced free primary school education in 2003. This move witnessed a 10% increase in enrollment in primary schools nationally. However, two decades later, more than 1.2 million primary-school-age children do not attend school (UNICEF, 2020). Most of these children are from poor families that cannot afford the levies charged by schools. Students are required to pay examination fees, buy school uniforms and learning materials and pay teachers for extra tuition.
This project will support the education of 40 children through public (government) primary schools by paying their school levies and providing them with learning materials and school uniforms. The students will also be mentored across their academic journey so that they can achieve their goals. This will enable them to obtain quality education thereby increasing their ability to become independent and self-reliant citizens. This will also enable them to support their families.
Education is one of the greatest providers of opportunities of people and drivers of sustainable development. By giving these needy children an opportunity to go to school, we are reducing their chances of engaging in unlawful social vices such as drug abuse, crime and early marriages. An educated child is an asset to his or her family and the community. This will have an overall impact of increasing their earning potential. This will in turn build community capacity to overcome poverty.
