Student Empowerment Feeding Programme

By Brigitte Onyschuk | Child Sponsorship Program Manager

JHS 3 students celebrating their graduation
JHS 3 students celebrating their graduation

As the students prepare to write their end of term exams this week we look back at the advancements made in the sponsorship program this term made possible by your generous support. This quarter we have continued to make advancements in the Student Empowerment Feeding Program, with nineteen additional students benefiting from 1 cedi a day for a nutritional meal during the school day. The feeding program also extended to reach the junior high school (JHS) 3 students to provide them with two nutritional meals a day as they wrote their Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). This was particularly important and beneficial as the first group of graduates from Challenging Heights Junior High School finished their exams. Abigail, a JHS 3 student, said that if the feeding program did not exist most of her classmates would have had to buy food off of the street, which would have made them more susceptible to illness while writing their examinations. Parents and guardians of the JHS 3 students also expressed extreme gratitude that their children were benefiting from the feeding program during this important time, as it reduces some of the financial burdens at home.

We have also continued to make improvements and repairs to the boarding house to ensure a safe environment for the twenty-one students boarding at the school. Maintenance work this term included repairs to the doors and locks, and repairs to the electrical sockets.

Once again, we thank you for all of your generous support and contributions to help keep the Challenging Heights students in school and away from forced hazardous child labour!
