Sumit is one of the many children living in the Nalapur, Rangpuri Pahadi slum of Delhi with his parents working as daily wage laborers in the nearby factories. Before joining Non-formal Education (NFE) classes under the Education on Wheels program of Sukarya, Sumit’s regular day would involve taking care of the domestic animals and playing around all day. He had never attended school before joining our classes and was also a victim of physical abuse from his alcoholic father.
After regular counseling Sumit and his sibling Neelam were motivated to pursue education and have been regular in attending classes and doing homework. Initially a shy kid with no training on personal hygiene he is now a motivated student punctual in attending classes and has never missed any assigned homework throughout. He is focussed, hardworking and has been securing best student award for last two consecutive months. The changes in him have inspired other children living in the same slum.
