The Story of Azharul
Eleven years old Azharul and his eight years old sister Hedina are both students of EOW. They originally belonged to the Malda district of Bengal. His father was a farmer who died six years from a heart attack. After that, Azharul’s paternal grandparents disowned them by calling his mother a witch. After receiving much name-calling from relatives and distant family, his mother left their ancestral village and came to Gurgaon with her children to work as daily wage laborers.
In Gurgaon, the family initially faced many problems owing to language barriers. It is challenging for the family to lead a life with the meager earning of the mother, who works as a domestic help in the nearby locality. One day two teachers of the EOW project, while finding a suitable location for running the project, came across little Azharul, who was trying to offer solace to his crying sister. When the teachers asked why they were crying, Azharul explained that they were hungry and their mother was at work and didn’t have money to buy anything and eat. On hearing this, the teachers fed the two children. Knowing Azharul and his sister never had formal education, they were admitted immediately with their mother's consent to EOW School.
Azharul initially used to suffer from attention deficit; still, with the constant support from the teachers, he is faring better in his studies and also appeared for the OBE examinations for 2023-2024. Azharul is now awaiting results to get mainstreamed into government school. He loves attending EOW bus school, as the classes are exciting and fun.
