The dream never dies. The dreamer in Aditya, 10, a resident of the Rangpuri Pahari slum of Delhi, as ambitious as any other young boy of his age, always wanted to become a police officer. Before the Covid-19 lockdown, Aditya was one of the regular students of Sukarya's Education on Wheels (EOW) bus. During the lockdown phase, his studies disrupted so he was depressed but when Sukarya took the alternative initiative to run the online classes and just by hearing this news, Aditya got thrilled and waited eagerly for the announcement date of online classes. His parents were also equally excited about the online classes. Now Aditya joins the online classes on time and he is one of the most regular students of virtual classes. Aditya is a hardworking student and is trying every day to fulfill his dreams. Sukarya’s virtual classes gave him wings to fly and fulfill his dreams. Aditya and his family are feeling very grateful that Sukarya has opened the door of education for all the children during this pandemic and continues to bring change in society.
Progress Report
Education on Wheels (EOW) Project, Delhi
July – September 2020
Due to the sudden outbreak of Covid19 and subsequent nationwide lockdown led to the suspension of the EOW classes and associated services in the field from March 23rd, 2020. There was no other option left except to have virtual follow-ups about the well beings of the children and their families during this crisis. The EOW team did and made sure that they follow the pandemic safeguard guidelines released by the Government.
During the lockdown phase, the worst setback to these slum children and their families was the loss of livelihoods. It was a challenge for Team Sukarya to officially resume work in a regular pattern to intervene and address the immediate needs of the community - food and safety essentials. Given the situation, Sukarya distributed monthly food ration packs and hygiene kits to the families of all listed children for three months.
Further options were explored to resume the EOW classes. Physical classes on regular EOW pattern was not possible, so alternatively online classes were introduced until the situation backs to the normal. However, initiating online classes with slum children was no an easy task as most of the children and their families do not have android phones, and even those who have are not familiar with downloading the zoom apps. They often face challenges in data pack recharging and dealing with other network issues. Thanks to the committed Education team of Sukarya that they have finally executed online classes in spite of all odds and on-field challenges.
