Nai Basti is a slum neighborhood near Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, famous for its quarry and inhabited mostly by the migrant workers from West Bengal. One such family is that of Riksina. Working as daily wage earners, her parents are engaged in dry waste-segregation comprising plastic, glass, paper and other metals. Living in a harsh condition, both parents toil hard and tend to involve their children to work as well to have some extra income.
Despite having a keen interest in studying, Riksina was not able to pursue the same due to her parents' financial condition. Being illiterate, Riksina’s parents had least awareness about education. Moreover, there was no school nearby that they could afford to go to.
This is where Sukarya’s intervention through the EOW program comes into the Riksina's rescue. Travelling in the classroom-cum-bus, Sukarya’ staff made it a point to explain to Riksina’s family among others, the importance of education, details of the EOW project, its curriculum and how the same can benefit their children, especially in light of their constraints. It was a blessings for them as they also wished Riksina to get the non-formal education after being registered with the NIOS to be prepared for a year to take the Open Basic exam, before being put in mainstream education- whether it is getting them enrolled in government schools or private schools supported by the Government.
Riksina is a bright girl who performs very well and actively participates in classroom activities and discussions, thus, making the best use of the EOW project while inspiring so many others.
