Stories of Change
Alekh is just 8-year-old and lives in Nalapar slum of Delhi with his parents and younger brother who migrated from Madhya Pradesh for a better life. Being poor Alekh has never been to a school in his life. The continuous cycle of poverty and illiteracy had forced him begging most part of his life facing harsh realities of child labor. But at last, he had a shed of light and hope in his life through Sukarya’s Education on Wheels program (EOW), which enabled him to study without leaving the boundaries of his neighborhood. It was found that Alekh suffered from a learning disability which further hampered his growth. But he didn’t give up and the teachers at the EOW program provided him the attention with special care that he required to have him enrolled in the local elementary school. Alekh learned at his own pace and is soon to be promoted into remedial classes.
Sanjana lives in Nalapar slum with her parents and 3 siblings. Being poor and having migrated from rural Punjab her family had many challenges to live even with bare necessities. Like any grown up children, Sanjana wanted to go to school but couldn’t for many reasons – distance, family pressure, income, etc. But her dream was realized when Education on Wheels Project team approached her for enrollment under their program. She and her parents responded with great cheers and now she is not only a proud hard working EOW student but also quite disciplined, punctual, well-mannered and a good performer. She is soon to be enrolled into a mainstream school. She aspires to be a teacher to help other children realize their dreams.
Progress Report - November 2017 to January 2018
The Project is running with full momentum as the enrolled children from both the slum locations are regularly & religiously attending the class with full of passion and enthusiasm. And their parents are also equally showing the great motivation and sincerity towards the educational needs of their children. It is reflected through their attendance during PTM –Parent teacher meetings which are held on monthly basis to address the academic and behavioral issues of children. PTM is one of the key activities under the program to ensure regularity of the children in daily classes.
This quarter can be termed as consolidation phase of the project as the children settled down properly with class atmosphere and they streamlined with academic pattern.
As per the set objective under the project a total 100 children are attending classes on daily basis through NFE- Non-Formal Education and Remedial classes from two slum locations of Delhi namely Nalapar and Israil camp near Vasantkunj.
