Challenge

Got Matar, meaning Bare Hilltop, is an area of dispersed rural settlement in the Sub County of Bondo in Siaya County in the west of Kenya, near Lake Victoria, the source of the river Nile. Its economy is based on fishing in the Lake and on small -scale farming which is susceptible to periodic droughts. The area is amongst the poorest in Kenya and suffered the highest level of HIV infection in all of Kenya around the turn of a century. AIDS killed many of the community's working age population.

Solution

Provision of school fees and uniforms to Got Matar Secondary School vulnerable children will prevent them from dropping out of school. Provision of school lunch programme for the Got Matar Institute of technology students and the day nursery children will enhance their concentration and wellbeing in school as majority comes from poor families and are not sure of finding even one meal in a day.

Long-Term Impact

Got Matar Secondary bursary students should be able to join Got Matar institute of Technology or any other higher learning institution. Got Matar Institute of Technology (IoT) offer opportunities for young people to learn practical skills that are in demand as Kenya's economy develop. The students who have acquired practical skills in craftmanship areas covered by Got Matar Institute of Technology should be able to be self-reliant by being job creators rather than job seekers.
