As we come close to US Mother's Day on May 12, we are focusing on supporting our Moms in Guatemala!
Ex-volunteer Lisa Bailey brought four friends with her to Guatemala this week, her third visit, to run our very first Breast Health Workshop in Santa Maria.
Lisa, a specialist in breast cancer surgery and prevention at the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center in California, gave the first ever workshop on Breast Health to more than 80 Mothers in Santa Maria. The community was really interested and the talk was given in Spanish and Kaqchikel to ensure everyone understood the information that was being provided. The workshop covered the importance of breast health and how to check and monitor breast health and included the opportunity for a health check from one of the team.
We also launched Plan Iron Woman this week with the same team, distributing seeds of iron-rich vegetables. The plan is specifically aimed at expectant mothers and young mothers to improve nutrition in a child’s first 1000 days of life, the time deemed most important for a child's development.
We are part of Global Giving's Mother's Day campaign this year, celebrating Moms in the US and Guatemala through one gift. If you would like to support Mom's in Guatemala, whilst gifting your Mom a handmade scarf and set of worry dolls then please take a look at our gift:

As I mentioned in my last report, schools are all back open and running smoothly! After the Christmas Appeal we raised sufficient money to give food and fruit until April in the schools but April will soon be upon us and the children really need the food and fruit they get at school.
We are also planning on inviting new students to the school and so need more room to host them. And of course, the running costs of each school still need to be found. Our schools are run purely on donations from our wonderful donors just like you,
As we have a special bonus day on Global Giving today, please consider donating again to the projects, right now so we can receive an extra 30% on top of normal donations COMPLETELY FREE to spend on food, fruit and school materials!
All schools open, look out for surprise Wednesday!

All 12 of our schools are running smoothly now, with a small break over Christmas in all but the three in Ecuador everyone was ready to be back in the first few months of the year!
In Itzapa, Guatemala, Carnival has been celebrated with a four attack with confetti! In Santa Maria doors reopened to 40 new children and those returning too.
In Honduras school started on 4th February with 150 children spread across primary secondary and college, all of these children are eager to learn, and so happy school has re-opened.
In Nicaragua 35 children have joined us in pre-school in La Thompson adding to the others returning and 107 have returned to Alexios Arguello. Term started with the all important Valentine’s Day with everyone learning the importance and of love, friendship and family.
Ecuador bought us a trip to the lakes for the children of Larcacunga, some going on a boat for the first time, a day learning about nature. They stuck to the same theme in Muenala bringing in flowers and decorating the school!
In Peru, the communities and surrounding area of our schools have been severely affected by the unseasonal heavy rains. However, unperturbed, Summer School continued through January and February, with extra classes for the children who weren't so successful in their exams at the end of 2012 to try to get ahead for the new term.
Look out for our next report on Wednesday morning, with our exciting announcement and plans for 2013 in Guatemala!
