Things are moving along well with the education program in Southern Sudan. All five of the schools have been built, and we've started classes.
Born at the end of a civil war that spanned two decades, the children in the photos below did not even hope for a primary education a year ago - there were simply no schools around, not even a building that could be rented and converted into a school. BRAC's first office in Southern Sudan was a tent we shared with the UN!
Here's an overview of what we've accomplished with your help:
* 5 schools have been built * teachers have been recruited and trained * 175 students have been selected and have started classes * initial meetings have been held in the community to generate support for the schools
While we've accomplished a lot of major goals, we still have work to do. The teachers need refresher trainings so they can prepare to take their students to the next grade. Students will need additional school supplies and workbooks for the next grade.
Thank you for your continuing support of the children in Southern Sudan!
Best,
Michelle Chaplin
