The project uses sports as a medium to bring together 1594 children in 6 urban slums of Chennai under one platform, build confidence & a sense of self-worth among them, and provide them with better educational and healthcare facilities, and thus bring about a visible change in their lives. The project also works with the parents of these children on the issues like Child Labor, Child Marriages, sensitize them on the issues and work towards mainstreaming the effected children back into schools.
43% of the 1594 children in the Vyasarpadi slum in Chennai do not attend school, involved in some form of child labour to augment family incomes. They are underpaid;most of them suffer from starvation, malnourishment and various forms of social discrimination.Child marriages are rampant.Non-availability of schools & Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centres only makes their situation worse. This project will ensure children attend schools, access to ICDS centres & thus their basic rights.
The project mobilizes the community, urges the authorities to take action on the existent dismal conditions of the children, & thus ensures access to community health & distribution services, better infrastructure & quality education at schools to cater to the children in the area. The project further increases the confidence of the children by tie-ups with Sports authorities and provides them with chances of representing India in various sports events, thus fostering their talent & confidence.
By working with the families on challenging child rights issues of child labour, child marriages, insufficient incomes & poverty, the project bonds these children towards education and keeps their spirits up through sports. For many children here, football is not just a game, it is that key that helps unlock their inhibitions, build confidence and face the world. It creates opportunities for them, and helps them come out of the poverty cycle, allowing them to accomplish greater heights in life.
