Ali ‘s transition from a drop-out to a scholar boy

By Usha Pillai | Director

When we identified Alibaba during a community survey in 2007, he was 10 years old and left schooling  in 2005 , while he was in first standard
itself. Alibaba had lost interest in school due to some quarrel in school with his classmates. He comes from a poor family . Parents are poorly educated and
his elder siblings are also school drop-outs.
After consistent follow-up and motivation, he started coming to our ‘Play & Learn ‘ centre. Slowly he developed an interest in the centre due to the interesting
approach of the centre.  Our next attempt was to re-enroll him in school.  In  June 2008, we re-enrolled him in school.
He used to attend school during the morning hours and continued to attend the IDEA centre during the afternoon hours. The remedial  teacher gave individual attention to him while
the Social Worker paid school and home visits till we realized he has well settled in school .
Within a short span of time, Alibaba  showed remarkable progress in studies and became the monitor of the class . Pune
Municipal Corporation runs Special schools for the talented and intelligent children from all the Municipal schools .
Admission to these special schools- Vidya Niketan is strictly through an entrance exam which is held after class 3.
Realizing the talent in Alibaba , the school teachers and IDEA’s teacher took extra efforts to prepare him for the entrance . As per our
expectation, Ali got through the entrance and got admission in  a Vidya Niketan School .

This is a story of how timely counseling and individual attention transformed a drop-out child to a ‘ Scholar child’ ! We all are proud of Ali !

We thank you for your generous contribution for our project and request you to continue supporting us to meet the recurring expenses of the project.
