28 Children Obtain Computer Literacy Skills!

By Rahul Thomas | Senior Manager-Operations and Donor Relations

Sahaara believes that every person has a dream and our work centres around ensuring that marginalized persons can articulate and work towards achieving their dream. Children living in Mumbai juvenile homes are one of the most marginalized children in the city. Institutionalized, these children are most often from highly poverty-stricken families.

As a part of the holistic intervention therein, Sahaara imparts computer education to the children between fourteen to eighteen years of age in the juvenile homes. Sahaara’s in- house computer course delivers a fitting foundation to the children preparing their skills for the technology-driven world outside the homes. The children attending computer training get a start which will help them break out of the poverty cycle and fulfil their dreams of a stable future.

During the reporting period of Oct to Dec 2018, 28 children attended the computer course.

Below is the story of a child who has benefited with the help of the computer training carried out by Sahaara personnel.

Aditya is growing with his computer skills!

Aditya* aged 14 years is studying in 9th Grade. If one were to lay eyes on Aditya, one wouldn’t necessarily  imagine that he had a tough life as he appears to be like any other boy his age. But if you get to know him, you would soon know just how hard his life has been and how he had to struggle to get to where he is today.

Presently Aditya stays in Chembur Children Home at Mankhurd. Chembur Children Home is government home were orphan and semi-orphan children are cared for till age 18.

Aditya was living with his family at Mumbai. When he was 6 years old, his mother died in a tragic incident involving a fire. Since then Aditya and his brother were looked after by their aunt.  After a year of living with his aunt, his father admitted Aditya and his brother at the Chembur Children home. In the year 2017, his father also passed away due to excessive alcohol intake.

Aditya joined the Sahaara computer class in the month of Nov 2018.

When he came to Sahaara Computer class he would not respond in the class. He was only interested in playing. He had difficulty with math and in remembering the formulas taught at the computer class.

Since the time he began attending, the teachers spent time with him. He was encouraged through screening of some short educational videos during the computer class. This helped him to understand the importance of education.

Teachers assisted him in learning addition, subtraction with the help of MS-excel. Since then he gained interest in learning the difficult subjects and is progressing well. He has been memorizing the formulas and practices them. He is now able to remember the formulas taught during the class. His typing speed has increased with practice. He doesn’t hesitate to ask questions when he has any doubts while learning computers. Through support, he progressed well in learning computers (MS-office) and gained interest.

Apart from this he also listens to the moral stories taught during the class and has inculcated good morals. He expresses his joy for having the knowledge of computers and the understanding of its importance. He plans to learn more and make a career in computer programming.
