Most children with disabilities in Kenya don't attend school because of myths surrounding disability, inadequate facilities and lack of trained staff. This project will enable up to 100 girls and boys with learning disabilities to receive an education, learn life skills and reach their full potential. Your support will also ensure that up to 20 older children can graduate, successfully transition from school to adult life and contribute fully to activities in their families and communities.
Only one in six children with disabilities attend school in Kenya. The majority are kept at home, separated from their community and denied a normal childhood because of stigma and lack of facilities. Children who do attend school often face discrimination, bullying, inappropriate curricula, poorly-equipped classrooms and staff insufficiently trained in special educational needs. As one headteacher told us: 'Unfortunately there are still negative attitudes to children with disabilities here.'
This project will enable 100 children to access education that equips them to lead fulfilling lives. Your support will fund essential running costs of units within primary schools for children with learning disabilities at Mitaboni and Thinu - including salaries for housemothers to provide daily care, cooks to make nutritious meals and guards to ensure security. We'll train teachers to promote vocational skills and support children to run enterprises like livestock-rearing after leaving school.
Appropriate education encourages full inclusion of children with disabilities and changes negative attitudes towards them. We'll promote the long-term sustainability of special education by campaigning for the Kenyan government to fund the full running costs of the Mitaboni and Thinu special units, as already achieved at our previous partner schools. Your support will also help train teachers across Kenya to prepare children with disabilities for fulfilled adult lives when they leave school.
