Challenge

In Uganda only 9% of school age going children with disability is estimated to have enrolled in primary school compared to the national average of 92%. Of the 9% only 6% are able to transition to secondary school. Girls with Disability often have no chance in accessing an education because of the high level of marginalisation. For blind girls the situation is worse as they are face multiple marginalisation.

Solution

Education is one of the guaranteed ways to change the lives of blind girls because of the poverty reduction potential it offers through increasing access to economic opportunities. Facilitating retention and transition of blind girls to different levels of education can increase their future education prospects. The project will support retention and transition through direct education support (sanitary towels, tuition, scholastic and equipping a resource center with accessible T&L materials)

Long-Term Impact

The project will empower the blind girls to make decisions that matters in their lives and that of other people with disabilities. For example, the decision to continue with their education over marriage as opposed to forced marriages where a decision is taken on their behalf.Education has the power to shape destinies as it offers an opportunity to visualize possibilities in life even where there is none.
