Alongside providing education for more than 150 children at the Mohlanatsi Community Centre, we also dedicate time to the GoGos, a term of respect for the elderly.
These extraordinary elders bring joy to everyone they meet. Not only are they enthusiastic learners, soaking up knowledge like sponges, but they are also eager to share their life stories, recounting their struggles during apartheid, their home lives and showcasing their traditional jewelry-making skills.
However, one of their favourite parts of ARRC's involvement is playing games. The activities cleverly combine mobility and cognitive activities to help keep their bodies active and their minds engaged.
Thanks to the generous donations raised for this project, 10 of the GoGos were able to attend Koru Camp, an immersive bush experience. For many of them, it was the first time they had seen the stunning wildlife and natural beauty of South Africa, that is situated just outside of their own community.
It was also their first experience of sleeping in a tent and toasting marshmallows over the fire—both of which they embraced and thoroughly enjoyed.
To say they had a wonderful time would be an understatement. For two nights and three days, there was nothing but smiles, laughter, singing, and dancing. Their infectious energy and joy lifted the spirits of everyone around them.
These incredible individuals have endured some of the toughest times, yet they remain resilient and joyful, positive and full of life.
Their gratitude toward ARRC is evident each morning as they enjoy their porridge, another reality made possible through your generous support of our project.
Ke a leboga - Thank you!
