Conservation Education for Rural Communities

Thanks to your wonderful and generous donations, in September, we were able to fund a trip to Koru Camp for 12 underpriviledged children from Mohlanatsi.

However, this was a camp with a difference, for both ARRC and Koru. This was a dedicated Girl Empowerment venture giving young women aged 12–18 a safe, supportive space to build confidence, leadership skills, and self-belief. 

The girls shared questions and concerns about their bodies, health, and relationships — revealing serious gaps in access to accurate, age-appropriate information. Without this knowledge, young women face risks such as early pregnancy, unsafe relationships, and limited understanding of their rights.

As well as participating in workshops and mentorship sessions, the girls had the opportunity to witness and experience the wonderful and beautiful wildlife in the reserve, making the camp both inspiring and unforgettable.

One of the most important outcomes from the camp was the apparent and urgent need for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education which led us to a new committment -  to roll out community based workshops for as many teenagers as possible, ensuring they have the tools, knowledge, and support to make safe, informed choices.

While the focus has been on empowering girls, we are also engaging boys in parallel sessions to promote respect, consent, and healthy relationships. By expanding our reach to both girls and boys, we aim to empower the next generation to take control of their health, their options, and their futures.

None of this — empowering young people, running workshops, and providing vital SRHR education — would be possible without the help, support, and belief of our supporters and followers. The Power of Reading: Opening Minds, One Book at a Time

When we asked the children at Mohlanatsi, “What is a library?”, their response was, “A room where you do your homework.” While this is not entirely incorrect, it became clear that their understanding reflected their reality—a quiet room without a single book in sight.

At the centre, our key goal is to enrich children's education—not only in animal welfare and conservation, but also by expanding their understanding and imagination beyond the boundaries that lie outside of their community of Selwane.

Creating a library had long been on our wish list. Access to books, both at home and at school, is extremely limited for these children. And so, the journey began.

We transformed an unused, cluttered room at the centre, into a bright, inviting space. Educational posters were added, new curtains hung, and bookcases sourced. The next step: finding the books.

Thanks to generous donations through GlobalGiving, we were able to purchase a wide range of age-appropriate books. We also partnered with a local NPO that runs a second-hand store. They kindly set aside suitable books for us, and in return, we made a donation to support their work, a win/win situation in which both organisations benefitted.

Finally, with over 400 books, we celebrated the grand opening of the new library. A group of enthusiastic readers have taken on the role of librarians, carefully recording each book that is borrowed, checking them back in, and following up on overdue returns.

The library has been a tremendous success. It’s not only broadened the children's knowledge and reading skills, but it has also sparked their imagination and a newfound love for books.

And while we’re off to a great start, our shelves still have room to grow. We can never have enough books—each one is a new adventure, a new lesson, a new opportunity.
