As you our donors are well aware the two schools - Mullah Kareem Nazar in Andkhoy District, Faryab Province & Besh Kapa Surkh in Aqcha District, Jowzjan Province of Afghanistan - were constructed by Barakat Inc. USA and Barakat Afghanistan together. Once the construction was complete the schools were deemed Government Schools. However, Barakat continues to support the schools by meeting the needs of the students in the form of providing for the following aspects of school life:
- Teacher Salaries for extra coaching and instruction (outside of school hours) at both the schools
- Funding for Monthly Doctor & Nurse Visits to Schools
- Firewood and/or electricity expenditure in schools
- Drinking Water expenditure at Besh Kapa Surkh (where the problem of saline water is acute)
- Rent of vehicle for bringing female teachers to schools
- Student stationary; sports uniforms and sports equipment expenditure
Your contributions to Barakat Inc. have helped us to continue this support.
For the 2018-2019 Academic Session at Mullah Kareem Nazar which goes up to 12th grade (which ended in June 2019; the new session starts in September this year) the results are as follows:
Out of a total of 747 boys and 643 girls, 454 boys and 391 girls have passed to move on to the next grade. The number of dropouts remains high and a cause for concern.
At Besh Kapa Surkh which goes up to 9th grade, the real challenge is of enrolling more girls in the school. Even through Andkhoy, Faryab is separated from Aqcha, Jowzjan by a time distance (by car) of only 2 hours, the atmosphere from one town to the other is very different. Where Andkhoy has always been progressive, Aqcha has always been a huge challenge in terms of female education.
At Barakat we continue to face these issues but are also in the process of invovling local business-people to take over the monitoring as well as funding of the schools in order to ensure sustainability and maximize impact as well as being more flexible and quick to adapt to changing local circumstances.
The threat of the Taliban increases daily in the North of Afghanistan where our schools are located; they grow in strength and numbers. Education is perhaps the only check to their power; political will being weak and lacking in the area.
Thank you for supporting Barakat as we meet the challenges that come with working in places that are distant not just in terms of the number of miles that separate us but also in terms of the socio-cultural norms that make education, especially for girls, a huge challenge.
It is my hope that you will continue to follow Barakat's progress as we enter into a new phase of our work in Afghanistan. I will be posting new projects and your support will mean just as much as it always has to us at Barakat and to our beneficiaries in Afghanistan and Paksitan.
