This project will tackle Romania's root causes of pet abandonment, by empowering the community with information and support. We will shape a community of responsible and informed pet owners, and help ensure less innocent animals have to live a life or hardship on the streets. This multi-faceted project provides educational resources and veterinary funding - so pets can be understood and cared for, and remain at the heart of the family where they belong.
There are hundreds of thousands of strays in Romania. The causes are a lack of education on animal behaviour and welfare, and the fact that in poor communities, owners simply can't afford to take care of their pets. The financial pressure and lack of behaviour awareness often leads to abandonment. As a result these poor unsterilised animals multiply, and even more animals are born into extreme conditions on the streets. The cycle has been going on for long enough.
This unique project will support people of all ages and backgrounds. We will tackle the root causes through education programmes - sharing information on animal behavioural issues and promoting responsible pet ownership amongst adults and children. We will offer financial support for people who cannot afford to care for their pet. By tackling the problem from all angles, we can empower people to understand their pets, give them the care they deserve, and drastically reduce abandonment.
By educating children from a young age about animal welfare and care, we can build a generation of responsible pet owners who will lead the way - and a future where pets are valued and respected like family members, just like they deserve. And by funding sterilisation for pet owners in poor communities, we'll help tackle the overpopulation issue and bring numbers down in the future.
