In Dawasamu, Fiji, our collaborative project focuses on community development, where we assist members of the local community with gender equality initiatives, global public health, early childhood development, waste management and recycling. Our primary goal is to support and strengthen environmental, health, and educational awareness through the dissemination of information via workshops and community-based learning, and stakeholder engagement.
The country has pledged to provide education, social security, access to clean water, income equality, and to protect land and marine resources. Groundwater sources have dried up, and shortages are common in the dry season. There is a need to adapt livelihoods in response to the changing pressures on traditional life, as a result of ongoing environmental and social change. Fiji also faces many health challenges, from a lack of health professionals to insufficient and inconsistent food supplies.
The project focuses upon continuous knowledge exchange with the local community and partners to ensure effective, long-term sustainable change. Through training and workshops, the project builds capacity with key stakeholders around environmental education and awareness, health data analysis, healthcare support, and waste management. To support early childhood development the project conducts tracked work/play sessions with clearly defined milestones and teacher training workshops.
The project works on immediate change whilst building capacity and affecting attitudes, regulations and policy. Through an ongoing program of mentoring, key members of the community will be able to assist and lead the key projects around early childhood development, preventative health and healthcare support, and local waste management and recycling. In the long term, the project will phase over to the community and the collaborative partners, once they feel prepared to continue independently.
