Summary

To provide quality education to the stateless community of Machar Colony where the largest age group is of 5- 15 years old children. As the community is stateless i.e. without identity, the opportunities to learn and grow are near to nothing Imkaan established Khel - a learning & recreational centre. With an informal education component, Khel focuses on a holistic approach to learning through a multi-age teaching structure where children are divided according to the learning level then age.

Challenge

Every family in Machar Colony have an average of 9 children. Statistically, 82.2% of the community is uneducated; 11.6% of the community includes those who can only write their name;54% of children work in shrimp peeling factories. With 67 private schools and 9 government schools in the community, children are still found getting involved in anti-social activities on the streets such as drugs and violence or refuse to go to school due to corporal punishment

Solution

Khel's education component doesn't follow a classroom structured curriculum. A multi-age teaching structure where children are divided according to the learning level than age. This child-centric approach helps in: - Peer to Peer Learning - Cross-Age Interaction - Continuous Reinforcement There are no grade-level comparisons and letter grades for the purpose of labeling. As a result, children are more likely to cooperate than compete and cater to learning level than age-based learning.

Long-Term Impact

A stateless community such as Machar Colony lacks identity and therefore access to educational growth. By implementing this project, Imkaan is able to provide an informal education component to children who cannot afford schooling, are unable to due to work or babysitting younger siblings. . Children studying at Khel and leaning basic education can apply their skills in opening small business ventures within the community and develop skills further through other Khel components.
