Educating Children Working in The Dumpsite is a project that intends to provide education pathways to children rehabilitated from the dumpsite. Majority of children in the dumpsite come from very poor families, who cannot afford to take them to school. Through this project, DADREG intends to complete the construction of a a primary school where children whose families cannot afford to take them to primary school due to lack of tuition fees would be taken to start or continue with their education
According to a research by DADREG and Community Development Initiative (CDI)- 2015, it was found that 65% of children working or scavenging in Dandora dumpsite are of school going age. These children come from very poor families who could not afford them basic needs like food, shelter and even education. These children are forced to work in the dumpsite in order to supplement family income. As a result of this, these children miss out in education & forced to join gangs at very early age in life
DADREG has been sending rehabilitated children to various public primary school. Though public primary schools in Kenya are supposed to be "free", children are still expected to pay for admission fees, buy uniforms, shoes, desks, chairs and writing materials. This means that DADREG can only send to school only few children depending on the funding we have. With our own school, DADREG will be able to admit as many children as possible and still maintain them in school through feeding programs.
The potential impact of this project is that it will continue admitting more children from the dumpsite and the slums around without worrying about the costs of tuition fees that they have to pay in order to join public primary schools. Instead of DADREG paying other schools to admit the children, such funds will be used to hire teachers, provide for hot breakfast and lunch, uniforms, shoes, thus making sure that the children are maintained in schools.
