Educate Ethical and Innovative Leaders for Africa

In Sub-Saharan Africa, youth unemployemnt is rampant, with even college-educated young people struggling to find work. Youth unemployment represents one of the region's biggest barriers to progress, but Ashesi is proud that our students defy this statistic. 100% of Ashesi graduates receive job offers, with many going on to work for multinational corporations, impactful NGOs, local businesses, or their own enterprises. Ashesi is committed to maintaining this track record and providing its students with the best possible opportunities for professional advancement. 

This month, Ashesi was proud to offer one such opportunity by hosting a Microsoft Codess event on campus. Codess is a community of female coders, established nearly five years ago to promote greater gender diversity in the fields of programming and engineering.Hundreds of these events, which bring young women together to receive mentorship and career guidance, have been held around the world since Codess was established, but this February’s event at Ashesi was the first ever to take place in Africa.45 women from Ashesi and the University of Ghana came together to hear from Microsoft executives and recruiters, and engage in an hour-long programming session based on Microsoft’s Azure program. 

“I signed up for the Codess event because I thought it would be a great opportunity to get more insight about the workings at Microsoft,” said Kalysa, a third year Computer Engineering Student at Ashesi. “At the end, I came out with knowledge of Microsoft’s Azure platform as well as an increased sense of motivation for my future as a woman in tech.”
