Continuing to Thrive with New National Standards

By Steven Lewis | Treasurer, US Board of Directors

We are currently in our 17th year providing a quality education, housing, food and assistance to vulnerable children in Kisii County, Kenya. We are continually grateful for the support you provide that enables us to provide a foundation that empowers our students to maximize their potential

This year, in response to a new national education structure and curriculum, we have added a ninth-grade class and hired new teachers to teach several new subjects. In addition, we have converted the old boys’ dormitory (as you may recall, we completed a new boys’ dorm last year) into a science and computer lab. We are pleased to report that despite the expense and challenges presented by the new standards and curriculum, we are continuing to thrive and to provide our students with strong preparation for secondary school (now grades 10-12).

We’d also like to share with you the story of one of our most promising students. Vivian’s grandmother, Agnes, brought her to our school back in 2014. Vivian’s mother had disappeared when Vivian was two and a half years old and her grandmother had become unable to continue to care for her. While Vivian is a very bright young girl, she has had serious challenges with her eyes for quite some time. This year, we took Vivian to a private hospital for special eye treatment and to obtain glasses. We are thrilled that Vivian’s eyes are much better now – they no longer tear and she sees clearly using her glasses. Vivian is continuing to excel in school, as she ranks first in an 8th grade class of 34 students. And, always grateful for the opportunities she has been provided, Vivian’s goal is to become an optometrist so she can help others in the same way she has been helped.

Thank you so much for your continued support. Your generosity helps us grow and evolve alongside our students’ needs. We couldn't do it without you.

With gratitude,
The Margaret Okari Children's Foundation Team
