Sunday A. has etched his name in the sands of brilliance, graduating with a remarkable 4.90 CGPA from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, emerging as the Best Graduating Student of his school. Today, we are proud to share the story behind this young man.
Our journey with Sunday began in 2022 when one of our sponsors, Phillips Akindele & Co, referred him to us and requested an academic and personal assessment. At the time, he was a sophomore, already deeply grounded in data analytics and driven by a rare sense of purpose. “I always loved Mathematics,” he recalled. “Before I gained admission, I began learning programming. When I discovered I could study Computer Science with Mathematics, the decision became effortless.”
His brilliance was unmistakable, and he met the criteria for our Brilliant but Disadvantaged scholarship support.
Sunday is the only child of his mother, a resilient single parent. His parents never married, and his father was absent throughout his life. “There was literally no support system aside from my mom,”he shared. “My uncles and aunties gave moral support, but financially, it was all on her.” His mother’s small business, selling drinks and pepper soup was their lifeline. She worked tirelessly to ensure Sunday never lacked the essentials. When his sponsor, Phillips Akindele & Co, stepped in with financial support, it lifted a heavy burden off their shoulders.
Like many fresh undergraduates, Sunday arrived on campus simply excited to be in school with no clear academic goals. That changed during orientation week. “I noticed some of my roommates, who spent the day playing FIFA, would wake up at night to read,” he said. “That was an eye-opener. It made me realize I needed to be intentional.”
His first-year results validated this new resolve: he scored 99/100 in a core Mathematics course, the highest in the class. It was the spark that confirmed he was capable of much more.
But beyond the books, Sunday has another love for football. A passionate Chelsea fan, he enjoyed playing in his free time.
Sunday Amuke’s story is one of grit, courage, consistency, and an unyielding commitment to excellence.
“I am grateful for everything and everyone in my life,” he said. “I am grateful to God for making it all possible. It still feels surreal, and I can’t fully explain it, I am forever grateful to Fair Life Africa Foundation and my sponsor for the financial assistance I received throughout the course of my studies. Fair Life Africa created a much needed support system both morally and financially. The monthly allowance I got really helped me. It was something I always looked forward to.” Sunday Amuke added.
From the son of a hardworking pepper-soup seller… To a scholar who rose above it all with grace and strength…
Sunday Amuke is a testament to what happens when resilience meets opportunity.
This is what we do at Fair Life Africa Foundation. There are a lot of underprivileged children who need support and with your contribution they can do so well in school. Do check our website and support a child through school.
