We’re celebrating remarkable achievements at Christel House Mexico (CHMX). The national PLANEA tests for 9th Grade students show that over 90% of CHMX students are passing in both Math (92%) and Language Arts (97%); and over 60% of our students are scoring in the highest level! The pass rates beat the national average by 57 percentage points in math and 21 percentage points in language arts. CHMX students also significantly outperformed private schools, with 47% more Christel House students in the top level in math than private schools and 39% more in the top level for language arts. “Our math and language arts curriculum goes beyond what is required by Mexico’s SEP (Secretariat of Public Education),” says Javier Alarcón Benet, CEO of Christel House Mexico. “We have very good, rigorous teachers, working with outstanding students and the results are demonstrated in these outstanding scores.”
Every year, the Technovation Challenge invites teams of girls from all over the world to learn and apply the skills needed to solve real-world problems through technology. Two Christel House teams will compete in the Technovation Challenge, and are currently training with Christel House Mexico 2009 grad Jesus Eduardo Morales Florencio. The girls must identify a community problem, develop a mobile app solution, and create a business plan to launch the app. Both teams are developing apps to help families create budget goals and manage their money. Jesus believes this challenge is a great way to promote computer science and introduce business principles at Christel House. “Preparing children with technological skills is an important component of breaking the cycle of poverty,” he says. For Jesus, giving back as a mentor is important. “Christel House gave me the opportunity and the skills to have a better future.” 20 years after Christel House began, graduates like Jesus are proving that the Christel House Model works, and contributing to 20 more years of making the impossible possible.
It started as a simple service project by a handful of middle-school girls. But it evolved into a passion project touching many at Christel House Mexico (CHMX). Building character through acts of service and community building is an essential part of an education at Christel House. Therefore, the girls were encouraged to grow their idea into a wider reaching project. Fifty-four girls, from Grades 1 through 11, two staff members and 15 family members joined the cause – cutting and donating locks of their hair to benefit cancer patients. The amazing service project did bring a few tears. “All of the girls were really brave and showed great character,” says Tania Álvarez Madrid from CHMX. “This was such a touching campaign. Witnessing this act of love was impressive.”
Libni C. is a glowing example of how Christel House prepares students for College & Careers. A graduate of Christel House Mexico, she is now in her second year of engineering school at the prestigious university, Universidad IberoAmericana. Libni credits Christel House with her success – particularly her strength in understanding mathematics. “The teachers were steadfast in their lessons and made sure we were really learning,” she says. While at Christel House, Libni was selected to attend Culver Academies over three summer sessions. She also interned for International Cruise & Excursions, Inc. (ICE) “I am really grateful to Christel House for all the opportunities they’ve always given me. Even after I graduated, they continue supporting me, urging me to achieve my goals.”
Christel House Mexico 8th grader Alex knows exactly what she wants to do when she gets to college, and she knows that Christel House will help her get there. “I like going to Christel House because they have a higher quality of education than other schools and they provide me things I need,” she says. Christel House provides her with assistance other schools don’t – food to keep her strong, a nurse to keep her healthy, plenty of space to grow and a safe place to learn. Alex lives in the barrios of Mexico City with her mother, who works during the day, and her older sister, who also attends Christel House. She has been studying there for 8 years, and has since discovered a love of mathematics and the amazing teachers who help her learn what she needs for the future.
Alex wants to study food chemistry (a program like nutrition science) when she gets to college, and is working hard to make sure she gets there. She is currently visiting the US to attend the prestigious Culver Summer Schools & Camps in northern Indiana along with 7 of the best and brightest from Christel House schools around the world. She is well on her way to a bright future and a career she is excited about!
