While there may be an age difference between Denise and Natalia H., these sisters are very close. Growing up, they learned to support and take care of each other. Denise is a first grader at Christel House Mexico (CHMX) and big sister Natalia is in seventh grade. Before coming to CHMX, the girls worked on street corners selling sweets to survive.
It wasn’t always like that. When they were very young, the girls lost their father in a tragic road accident. Living with their mother, the family struggled to get by. Enrolling at CHMX, Denise and Natalia are excelling in their classes. Their mother now has a job as a domestic worker. Inspired by her daughters, Mom is going to school on weekends to earn a high school diploma. For Denise and Natalia, Christel House Mexico offers security and a path to succeed.
Christel House has been transforming lives for 20 years.
There are significant challenges to educating children in Mexico. Christel House Mexico CEO Javier Alarcón Benet believes overcoming poverty for children isn’t just about economics – it’s a cultural issue, too. Mexico is a poor country according to Javier though it is slowing changing. He sees the challenges. As kids advance from first grade to high school classes, Javier says he sees a difference in the students. With a good education and support, they change their mindset as they grow at Christel House. “Christel House is making a cultural change in Mexico,” he says. “This is human transformation.”

Your support is educating the next generation and creating successful futures for students like Ivan.
Ivan grew up in a little room on the roof of the building where his mother worked as a janitor. Now, not only is he a successful and practicing dentist, this Christel House Mexico alum also teaches 12th grade health sciences at the school. He recalls his first class when he was a student at Christel House – amazed to be sitting in front of a computer. “It was a dream come true!”
Returning as an instructor at Christel House, Ivan remembers the positive impact of his teachers. “I am very grateful I have the opportunity to contribute to the next generation of Christel House students.”
Graduates are a wonderful resource for students at Christel House Mexico (CHMX). Six alumni are now working in various roles at the school, helping transform lives of current students. César Luna Limón, a web developer teaching computer classes to middle and high school students, says the opportunities at Christel House allow him and the other alumni to grow by sharing their skills. Alicia Fernanda De LeónMeza is working as the CHMX receptionist and preparing to study for a career in accounting. Guadalupe Nuñez Salazar, part of the College & Career team, is giving back. “I have the opportunity to help students and alumni as they did and continue to do for me.” Maricela Borbonio’s seven years of experience in social work assists Christel House families that need it most. She sums up the team’s appreciation: “We get to realize our biggest dream – helping others.”
Alejandra León will never forget her first day as a 3rd grader at Christel House Mexico (CHMX). “We were welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm – that made me feel safe and loved.” Growing up at Christel House, Ale received valuable guidance from the College & Careers program. She graduated from CHMX and entered Mexico’s CETIS high school system, earning a technical/professional degree in social work. An internship at Christel House inspired her to teach. But a financial setback put her university plans in jeopardy. A chance to work as a receptionist at CHMX saved her college dreams. She balanced work at Christel House while pursuing her university studies. “The teachers supported me at all times,” she says. Ale impressed the Christel House staff and was offered a job as a teacher’s assistant. Today she has her own class, teaching 2nd grade at Christel House. “I teach the way they taught me – with love, with professionalism and with a vision for the future of the children.”
