Project Name: Educate 200 Children with Disabilities in Bangalore

Summary of each event:

Sincere thanks to Global Giving for supporting APD’s Shradhanjali Integrated School. One of the major purposes of SIS is to promote Inclusive Education and this model is much needed to sensitize the mainstream schools to accept the Inclusive Education system. Through your long term support, we have been able to achieve the desired results and provide education to children with disabilities. 

In the academic year 2019-20, we have a total of 205 students in school. We are working towards improving the quality of education by enhancing the skills of our teachers, innovative teaching practices, digital teaching and computer lab, incorporating alternative communication and teaching for children with Cerebral Palsy.  For Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) we follow methods like Formative assessment (FA) and Summative Assessment (SA) to assess the student’s level of learning. Overall 163 children have been rehabilitated like speech therapy, sign language, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy. SIS is a resource center, shares knowledge, and skills among model school teachers and the partner staff.

Cleanest classroom trophy

The cleanest classroom trophy was handed to 1st std students. Children were encouraged to maintain cleanliness in the classroom.

Student Council Election

Contestants for Student council elections were announced in the assembly. Then contestants campaigned in classrooms and finally voting was done on 10/07/2019 at the computer lab. Results were announced on 18/07/2019. Students were encouraged to be leaders. Students were explained about their role and they were happy to take up the responsibility.

Exposure Visit Cubbon park       

Nursery and special class children were taken to Cubbon park along with two teachers, one support staff and four parents. Children learned on unity, enjoyed nature, greenery, involved in games and activities conducted by teachers.

Wheelchair tennis workshop for children.

Four of our students and three of the old students took part actively. Two coaches conducted the workshop at Shree Datta Sports Academy. New Tennis wheelchairs were used by our students for practice. As sports helps in developing great interpersonal skills our children are happy to have this opportunity. Four students are taking part in practice every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday along with the teacher.

Party with Special Class on successful completion of 1 month   

We celebrated the successful completion of one month through conducting Games and Activities like

1.The ball into the bucket

2. Musical chair

3. Blasting the balloon

4. Sandwich making       

All the children and parents enjoyed the party, sharing, caring, and responsibilities.

Eye checkup      

All Students Eye checkup was done by the staff of the Zamindar microsurgical eye Centre. Recommendations were given to the needy students.

House wise singing competition             

House wise singing competition was held at the dining hall. One singing group for each house was formed by the house teachers and the theme was patriotic songs. The red house won the first prize. Team spirit and patriotism were nurtured in the children.

Training by volunteers from Ireland for our staff

General emotional skills to handle kids were presented effectively through the actin first session. The second session was focused on phonics the five key skills. Learning letters formation. Blending and tricky words. Inspirational sessions motivated teachers to practice creative and activity-based teaching.

Exposure visit – I & II    

Grade I & II were taken for a day outing to Orion East Mall. Children learned the trading, marketing, discount and maintenance of commodities; they also enjoyed the games and other activities at the mall.

Exposure visit III, IV, V, VI, and VII

4 Teachers and 5th, 6th, 7th standard children had been to Bangalore palace. With all the exuberance and richness children were amazed to witness the historical palace. Garments, utensils, photographs and the grandeur of the royal surrounding left the children amazed.

Orthopedic Camp for the students.

Students from all the classes participated in this camp. Two orthopedic doctors from Sanjay Gandhi Hospital came and examined the children and prescribed the surgical and therapeutically needs and also suggestions were given to the parents on the specific needs of CWSN.                Parents were briefed on their wards ailment disability and prescribed surgeries. Treatment and follow up. However financial constraints to the parents below the poverty line this is one of the greatest challenges to be faced.

Poem Recitation Competition. 

As a literary competition. Students recited poems in English, Kannada, and Hindi. Team spirit and creativity were nurtured. The red house won 1st prize, greenhouse won 2nd prize. The poetic minds and imaginative thoughts rolled out of each child’s heart and mind.

Rangoli Competition.   

Students drew rangoli an allotted place. The theme of the competition was “Independence day” Students participated actively. Team spirit, creativity, and patriotism were nurtured. Students were judged based on the set criteria. The red house won 1st prize, Blue House won 2nd prize.

Independence Day        

School choir sang patriot songs under the guidance and instructions of our vocalist teacher.   We celebrated Independence day with patriotic spirit. Our leaders spoke about the importance of independence and our responsibility towards it. Grade VII student was trained by our teacher to speak about the freedom fighter Bhagath sigh. This brought out the public speaking skill in the student and encouraged many others to admire.

Teacher’s day   

As teachers are known to shape the mind of youth, and without knowledge no one can exist in this world. The teacher imparts good value in children and turns them into responsible citizens. So, our children had a teacher's day celebration as a gratitude to their teachers. Students took turn to plan and carry out the event to entertain the teachers.

 The principal recognized and honored teachers and volunteers for their service to children.        Organizational, networking, Resilience and Adaptability, Unbridled Creativity, attitude of gratitude was nurtured. Children came up with great gratitude cards, carried out the event with fun games planned instantly for teachers.

Science Talent Exam 

As competitive exams are like a positive push for students towards their excellence. Children were facilitated to write the Putani vignana science talent exam with the guidance of two teachers in the dining hall. Students were motivated to endeavor for better and deeper understanding of subject and compete outside the school.

International Literacy day          

As the aim of International literacy day is to promote the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. Facts about the literacy were discussed in the assembly. Posters on literacy, proverbs, and poems were shared in the assembly and also students conveyed the world oneness through the literacy message by holding the flags of different countries and the poster.Active learning was nurtured in the students to establish a meaningful connection with the world.

Created awareness about literacy, students learned about literacy and the importance of it.

Hindi Divas        

Hindi Divas was held in small ground to commemorate the adoption of Hindi as an official language of India. Students performed assembly in Hindi. Importance and the reason for the Hindi divas were explained by the Hindi teacher. Children were connected with language to make their learning more meaningful. And are aware of the day and the facts about it.

ABA Workshop

Our certified and experienced trainer in Applied Behavioral Analysis) ABA conducted the workshop for all the teachers about ABA. She discussed the principles of ABA and the methodology. It enabled teachers to handle the student’s behavior which is a day to day challenge through this effective/organized method.

International day of sign language         

The international day of sign language was held in the dining hall. A teacher shared about the importance of deaf day, song mime, dances were performed by hearing-impaired children and a movie about Helen Keller was shown to encourage students and parents. Parents shared their experiences with the child and how school facilitated them. Each child received a small gift as a remembrance of this day. And then the event ended with national anthem depicted through sign language.                Awareness about the facts around the international day of sign language was created.

A platform for hearing impaired children encourage, involve and develop was created.

Parents and teachers capacity building on Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Physio Therapy              

Workshop on importance of eye-hand coordination and behavioral issues was conducted. It. enabled the teachers and parents with few activities that they can encourage the child to do to improve their handwriting, hand function and the co-ordination with eye. Similarly, capacity was built on importance of hearing aids, their design and maintenance. Parents and teachers were taught anout the use of hearing aid and its maintenance eachers. They were also taught about the maintenance of a wheelchair. Briefed about how to use the wheelchair, its mechanism, designs, and types..

Fireless cooking              

The class-wise fireless cooking event was held in the small ground. Students enjoyed cooking, displaying and learning about nutrition. Cooking with children in school helps to teach nutrition education such as planning meals and make smarter food choices.

Dental, Eye and General checkup camp by Rajiv Gandhi              

Dental, eye and general checkup camps were held in the dining hall by Rajiv Gandhi. All the students participated in it and the prescribed further treatment for necessary cases.   To recognize and manage basic health problems of school children.

Craft from waste material                          

Children were thought to reuse and understand the benefits of recycling. Recycling saves the planet, saves the environment and was nurtured skill development and creativity through the process.

Art Therapy

Ms. Vinitha conducted Art Therapy for selected children.

 Children are very creative and enjoyed drawing, coloring, and painting. The aim of this activity was to focus on developing concentration.

Wheelchair Tennis

Selection of children for Wheelchair Tennis.

 Totally 19 students who are 8 to 15 years old were selected for testing. Out of which only 5 were chosen for Tennis coaching in the month of May 2019.

Planting

This activity enabled children to anticipate rains after Ugadi festival and expect the saplings to grow.

Students were thought about nature, festival, rain, seeds, and planting concepts.

alents Day

Recognized talents & rewards 2018-19. One of our Chief Guest gave Inspiring speech for children and shared his experience as a student of SIS

Encourage and nurture talent in students.

Students were inspired to pursue talents and good conduct.

Parent-Teacher Meeting grade nursery to 7th

Parents attended the review and report card meeting with class teachers.

Report cards were handed to parents and the progress of child was discussed.

Training on Emotional Skills and Methods of teachings.

All the SIS teachers attended the training.

It was focused on Emotional skills, Emotional feelings and methods of teaching activities. The activities were very creative and Innovative. Seven methods were used on the topic "Tree ". The 3V's were very necessary for teaching.

Visual 55%, Vocal 38 % and Verbal 7% with the percentage.

Training on communication skills and classroom management.

All the SIS teachers attended training.

It was focused on Communication skills and Classroom Management. Types of communication, forms, Do’s, and barriers of communication and effective communication

Summer camp

One day summer camp was organized by Srushti Montessori house of children and Sahayog at Balabhavan, Cubbon Park, Bangalore. 12 children and 2 staff participated.

 Children were very creative and actively learned pottery, clay modeling, photography, painting, singing, and dancing. It was a good opportunity to find an area of interest and gain different skills.

Training on Personality Development and Self Esteem.

All the SIS teachers attended training.

 It was focused on Personality Development and Self Esteem. The activities are Roleplay on Emotional skills and performance by teachers and focused on self Esteem, positive steps to improve our self-esteem.

CRE Training

2 Staffs attended the training at MAP Education center

It was excellent training. Staffs were benefited from it.

School re-opening and Capacity building meeting for new admission parents

Teachers welcome students for students for the academic year 2019 -20. Conducted orientation for the new admitted children and their.

Created awareness of APD parents. Sense of belongingness was created in the mind of children, parents, and staff which motivates their enthusiastic arrival to school every day.

World Environment Day

Celebrated World environment day through quiz competition

Children came up with answers to the questions and teachers asked them to research further to know more about environment.

Drawing Competition

Drawing competition was held for all the students on behalf of Environment day the topics were all about saving the environment

Children were allowed to express their thoughts about saving the environment through art.

Bhoomi Habba (Earth festival)

30 children and 6 staff participated in the expo held at Vistaar.

It was exposure to the children and staff and they were able to develop contacts with the other participants and entrepreneurs were interested to share their skills with our children.

Advocacy Meeting

Created awareness on disability rights.

Awareness was created about DDRS and child-centric grants.

Visit to Nehru Planetarium

Visit to Nehru Planetarium for sky watching with 60 children and 5 teachers.

Children enjoyed learning about galaxies, universe and planets. Science teachers made the day an enjoyable one by explaining the main concepts in the technical park at the planetarium

Inspection from National Institute for Open Schooling Staff

From NIOS, two Inspectors visited our school.

The inspection was done. SIS will be the center for NIOS classes. This will be an added advantage for APD’s service and will benefit all CwSN

Audition for singing class

Audition for singing class was held.

Music training will be resumed on every Saturday by our vocalist volunteer. Body movements and focus on rhythm enables each child to develop skills of concentration.

Full attendance reward.

7th standard students were rewarded for the full attendance of a class.

Students are encouraged to attend classes every day. Each class with a day’s full attendance will be presented with a trophy.

Awareness program

5 teachers attended rainwater harvesting awareness program.

Radio FM Program on Yoga and Art

20 children 2 staff were involved in the interaction. Ms. Usha Raj from Radio One 94.3 FM interacted with the students and staff about the uses of yoga and art for disabled.

Inauguration of Special class

Inaugurated the special classroom with students, parents, special teachers, and principal.

International yoga day

Children and staff assembled in the small ground Our students spoke about yoga Ms. Sudha conducted a yoga session.

Awareness about yoga was created. Yoga session will be followed regularly for all children both CwSN’s and able-bodied

Meeting with Vidhya on playable

Kavithamma, Sudhakar, Catherine Kavitha attended the meeting. New updates, syllabus were discussed and a demo was given.

Provided the basic knowledge to use the Playable for effective learning.

Orientation by Javeria Banu

Strategy, plans, budget, and priorities of APD on 60th year anniversary were discussed.

It was useful for our staff to know about the plans of APD to involve and inspire them to be part of it.

Baseline assessment

Baseline assessment Papers were prepared and assessment was taken.

Teachers are aware of the child’s current stage. Assessment results will be entered in Goonjan as the academic year continues

Parents meeting

Awareness of APD and SIS was through video display and presentation. Teachers took a turn to explain about school activities. The briefing was done on Fees and travel.

In the academic year 2018-19 we have a total of 176 students in the school, We are working towards improving the quality of education by continually enhancing the skills of our teachers and Innovative teaching practices, planning for digital teaching and for computer lab, incorporating alternative communication & teaching for children with CP, as per the measurable indicator 90% of the learning progress is achieved in last year. For Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) we follow methods like Formative assessment (FA) and Summative assessment (SA) to assess the student’s level of learning. Overall 120 children have been rehabilitated like speech therapy, sign language, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy. SIS is resource canter shares knowledge and skills among model school teachers and the partner staff. We have planned to start Special remedial sessions from June 2019, to enable the severely disabled children. They will receive extra support in special classrooms. They will be supported by special educators and extensive therapy will be provided. Enrollrolement to National Institute of the open system (NIOS) is in progress and 35-40 students will be taking up exams through NIOS. 2. Key Actions and Outcomes of the Program: 2018-19 Sl. No Activity Key Actions / Target for 2018-19 (Project Commitments) Outcomes & Details 1 Tata Edge Training. Tata Edge Training was conducted by Mr. Jawed. Training on enhancing the software skills of teachers. 2 Unnati national exam Prize distribution Social Science Unnati national social science exam was conducted and 31 children participated. One of our students got First place at the Block level in social science. 15 children have got first class. This competition helped to improve their curricular activities & self-confidence. 3 APD Team Outing Team outing from different Departments was visited Wonder-la It was a great exposure to facilitate bonding with employees across APD. 4 Women's day Celebrated Women's day at APD women’s participated in competitions like Hairstyling, Photography and many more fun activities and men also participated. Staffs performed Dance, Skit, and other activities. Mrs. Anita Bhatt gave an inspirational speech on Women’s Day. It was a great experience with all staff sharing the stage & enjoyed.   5 Summative Assessment-II Children attended Summative Assessment-II NetApp volunteers Visited the school and supported our special children in their exams. Evaluating children’s skills and improving in their exams played a major role in providing necessary qualities such as hard work, patience, creativity and leadership. NetApp Volunteers supported the children in writing the exam and conducted other activities to engage the children who did not have an exam. 6 ANZ volunteer visited. Volunteers from ANZ visited and organized activities like Games to the children and enrolled with children by playing in-door and out-door games. Children were an enthusiast in participating in the games with NetApp volunteers & played in-door & out-door games, it helped them to acquire social skills, positive attitude, and personal development. 7 7th std farewell 6th std classmates gave them a farewell party by performing a dance, song, game, etc. and also teachers share their experience. To give the lasting impression of the school and to thank them for being with us and sharing their talents in every event organized by us and for their effective participation. 8 Radio Active Storytelling. children visited Radio station where Ms. Aruna and Ms. Pallavi narrated a story about an Elephant and conducted a few fun activities for the children. Storytelling was very effective for children and helped them to relate to one another and was helpful in the development of children. 9 Wheelchair Tennis Children’s were selected to play Wheelchair Tennis between 8-15 years old. 19 children participated in Wheelchair Tennis out of which 5 were selected for Tennis coaching in the month of May 2019. 10 Prathiba Day “Talents Day” to receive the prizes for the competition held for the academic 2018-19. Recognized the children's talent and reward them in performing well in their extracurricular and academics. 11 Parents – teachers meeting Parents attended the meeting to collect their report cards and progress. 98% of the parents attended the meeting. Parents were happy to see the progress of their children in all the fields of education and extracurricular activities.

APD runs the Shradhanjali Integrated School (SIS) since 1973  - that takes in young children with disabilities and transforms their lives.  SIS gives wings to their dreams . SIS has transformed lives of many children &  they have gone on to become successful doctors, IT professionals, engineers and most importantly - Confident and Independent citizens.
