#Giving Tuesday is almost here!

Greetings EFAC Supporters!

We hope you are healthy and safe as the global pandemic persists and our lives remain upended. It is a pleasure to be sending you this report about our Help 20 Girls Stay in School project.

As you may know, Kenyan secondary schools closed in March; at that time, all 340 EFAC scholars returned home to their families and have been waiting patiently for the Ministry of Education to relaunch the 2020 school year. Not to be deterred, our scholars have engaged in remote learning, taking advantage of the digital access tools we provided such as smartphones and internet data. EFAC has also hosted weekly virtual webinars over Zoom to keep our kids engaged, supported, and on track. We started a peer tutoring network, linking EFAC college students with high schoolers for academic support. We hired a mental health counselor to provide social-emotional support for students living in challenging circumstances. And we watched with awe as our students dove into service projects and COVID relief initiatives to make a difference in their home communities.

Yes, COVID has presented extraordinary challenges to the global education sector — our scholars are experiencing an unprecedented disruption in their schooling. But we have responded by pivoting, innovating, and rising to the challenge. We are proud to say, these 20 girls whom you have so generously funded, are healthy, connected and ready to return to school in early 2021.

We hope that by the time we submit our next report, it will begin with two words: They’re Back!

EFAC Update: Help 20 Girls Stay in School!

Scholastica is one of our 20 Form 1 girls!

Since we launched this project to help 20 talented young Kenyans access a high school education, the world has been turned upside down by COVID-19. There are two things we want you to know about EFAC at the moment, and about the status of your generous donations. 1. Our COVID-19 response has been immediate and thoughtful, and we are successfully navigating this 'new normal' - we have never felt stronger or more committed to this work! 2) The girls whom you supported in this project remain engaged with their education, and we are closely monitoring the Kenya Ministry of Education's plan for re-opening secondary schools. We are in touch with each girl, and know they are healthy and safe as they await their return to school. Your donations remain focused on providing access to education for these EFAC scholars; their futures are bright thanks to the support you demonstrated in March during this campaign!

One of the most unique and exciting aspects of our COVID response has been the purchase of a smartphone (loaded with data and educational software) for all 340 secondary scholars. We had terrific partners and donors contribute to this emergency effort, and the result is that our students will continue to learn despite coming from challenging circumstances and remote regions of Kenya. We don't know of any other education NGO that has been able to provide this remote learning tool for its participants. We want to thank you so much for investing in education for these very special Kenyan girls. Never has the world demanded more of us as global citizens, and you have stepped up to the plate at the perfect time. Because of you, 20 talented Kenyan students can stay in school. Be it remotely or on-site... their lives will be forever changed!
