This project will reach 15,000 adolescents and youths aged 10- 24 years in rural areas of Nakuru County with age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health information to enable them to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. We plan to enroll in the Sexual and Reproductive Health program in 30 rural schools and reach young people outside of school by organizing tournaments, youth rallies, and team-building activities in the villages. Peer Educators will champion the program.
According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022, 18% of girls aged 15-19 in Nakuru have begun childbearing. The alarming prevalence of teenage pregnancies in Nakuru highlights the critical need for targeted interventions that address the root causes of these issues, including inadequate knowledge about contraception, limited access to reproductive health services, and pervasive societal norms that discourage open discussions about sexuality.
Peer educators will reach adolescents and youths in and out of school with age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health information through monthly school programs and non-formal settings where young people feel comfortable such as youth rallies and organized tournaments. These sessions will cover issues such as gender-based violence, sexuality, sexual and reproductive health illnesses, healthy relationships, and family planning. Thus they will be able to make informed decisions.
The project will reach over 15,000 adolescents and youths in and out of school with Sexual and Reproductive Health information enabling them to make informed decisions about their reproductive health resulting in reduced rates of risky sexual behaviors that result in, unplanned and teen pregnancies, unsafe abortion, risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and school dropout rates in our target communities.
