Progress report

By Lilian Langat | Project Leader

At just 20 years old, Lucy never imagined she would find herself standing in front of a classroom, guiding her peers through discussions about body changes, relationships, and reproductive health. But today, she is not just a Peer Educator—she is a mentor, a friend, and a source of hope for many young people in our community.

Every week, Lucy visits schools and community centers, engaging students in open, honest conversations about sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). For many, these sessions are the first opportunity they've had to talk about these important topics in a safe and supportive environment. Through her work, Lucy has helped young girls understand the importance of menstrual hygiene, empowered young people to make informed decisions, and guided them on how to resist peer pressure and avoid teenage pregnancies.

Despite the passion and commitment of peer educators like Lucy, Kalyet Afya Foundation (KAF) faces significant financial constraints. With limited funding, KAF struggles to provide enough educational materials, cover transportation costs for peer educators traveling to remote areas, and organize follow-up sessions to track progress. The demand for SRHR education is high, but the number of trained peer educators remains small, leaving many adolescents and youth without access to the support they need.

Yet, despite these challenges, KAF remains hopeful. With additional support from donors and well-wishers, they aim to recruit and train more peer educators, expanding their outreach to ensure no young person is left behind. Increased funding would allow the program to provide more learning materials, transportation support, and enhance follow-up initiatives—ensuring that every adolescent and young adult has the opportunity to learn, grow, and make informed choices about their health and well-being.
