Summary

For 22-year-old Grace, life was once a cycle of uncertainty. Today, thanks to the Bus Scholarship Fund by the Art for Children Foundation, she's pursuing her dream of becoming an Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teacher at St. Ann's Montessori Teachers Training College. This transformative initiative, born from two roundtable workshops and over 20 consultative meetings with stakeholders since January 2024, aims to empower young adults transitioning out of children's homes in

Challenge

In Kenya, young adults leaving children's homes face bleak futures. Some fall into early marriages, exploitative jobs, or dangerous behaviors as a means of survival. With Nakuru County facing high spikes in HIV infections among teenagers and youth, minimal community support and no access to further education or vocational training, these young adults remain trapped in cycles of economic instability, vulnerability, and exploitation.

Solution

The project provides scholarships for vocational training and apprenticeships, equipping young adults like Grace with the skills needed to build independent and stable futures. It offers access to vocational training tailored to individual interests, psycho-social support to ease the transition into independent living, education on life skills, gender equality, and HIV prevention, as well as apprenticeship opportunities to gain professional experience and financial stability.

Long-Term Impact

The project ensures a smooth transition for young adults from children's homes into the broader community with dignity and confidence. It promotes quality education and mentorship, reducing exploitation, abuse, and HIV risks. By fostering a gender-equal community, it empowers young women and men to pursue careers and challenge societal norms. Additionally, it enhances economic stability by equipping participants with vocational skills for self-reliance, building a resilient, empowered community.
