Summary

In Colombia, violence against women and girls is a persistent and multifaceted problem, in which various factors converge to exacerbate the situation, such as armed conflict, patriarchal culture and the low credibility survivors have in the Justice system. We aim to implement our Voices of Hope project, training 50 women per year in prevention and response to violence, which they will replicate in their communities through educational talks and using the provided educational material.

Challenge

In Colombia, violence against women and girls is a persistent and multifaceted problem, where the latest figures in 2023 recorded a total of 630 femicides, almost two femicides a day. Gender violence also includes physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence against women and girls, many of these cases occurring in the context of violent relationships with partners or ex-partners. Out of the 119,483 cases reported in 2023, 84,125 were reported by women.

Solution

A needs assessment will be carried out regarding Gender-Based Violence (GBV), through focus groups to adapt the educational content to the community's needs. 50 women leaders will be trained in prevention and response to GBV in the communities of Cartagena and Bogota, using a teaching toolkit. The leaders will be responsible for providing information to women and adolescents in their community through educational talks using the kits.

Long-Term Impact

Training 50 women leaders will not only strengthen their skills in prevention and response to gender-based violence, but will also empower them to become agents of change in their communities. This will ensure the effective transfer of knowledge and skills, promoting the denaturalization of gender-based violence among women in the community, as well as the recognition and subsequent use of institutional care routes.
