Hello to all of our donators!
I’d like to thank you all once again for your ongoing support – it is hugely appreciated. Over the last few weeks, we have been focussing mainly on food security in the area. As you might have gathered by now, food security is one of the main issues facing the area and fighting it has been one of our main goals that we have been working towards since the beginning of the project.
We have identified a few new areas in the region which show promise for food gardening. We have had great response from the youth in the area, which have been more than willing with helping us with some of our ongoing research on the soil (which is more like sand) in the area. Reid and I can’t always be on site so it is invaluable to have people helping us on site while we aren’t there. We supplied them with different soils and compared them to the soil that is found naturally in the area. We also supplied the people helping us with tables to complete and managed to involve them thoroughly in collecting data. They seemed thrilled to be able to get involved in something like this.
The Indlovu soil performed poorly as expected, but we were glad to find that Vermi Compost did well. Vermi Compost is extremely cheap and only a fraction of the cost of commercial soil or compost. Obviously in a poverty stricken area, money is an issue so we are looking to explore and fund a Vermi Compost venture which shows promise for the future.
We do apologize for the delay in our regular project reports and will be sure to keep you more informed in the future.
Thank you - from your project leaders
