The son preference in India has led to a female feticide situation. Discrimination against surviving girls and women is uncontrolled. It is compounded by caste, ethnicity and poverty issues for girls living in rural areas denying them growth opportunities, initiative and visibility in civic life. We need to help them acquire access to health and learning resources and receive training in life skills to participate actively in civic life and become change agents
The project establishes community based girls' centers to provide safe learning spaces for girls in slum areas. Girls will receive training in leadership with use of traditional and electronic media and networking skills to speak up on relevant social issues. They will raise issues of discrimination against girls and women in education, health and decision making and work for solutions in partnership with other groups
150 adolescent girls will become advocates of girls' rights in their own communities and 200 more will become supportive for that. Girls' health and education status will have improved. They will have shared their new knowledge and skills with women and youth and initiated action for improvement in quality of community life. 200 families will have brought some change in their discriminatory attitude towards women and girls
