Helping kids get a head start

By Cara Myers | Director of Development and Innovation

We are now nearing the end of the school year in Mozambique, which means that preschools are also wrapping up. This year we have been able to provide free early learning education to 150 preschool aged children in Mozambique. Each day, the students have enjoyed a nutritious breakfast and lunch, while also playing games, learning the alphabet, and listening to stories from their preschool teachers. For us, a key focus has been developing Portuguese language skills for these kids. As a former Portuguese colony, the official language in Mozambique is Portuguese. However, many kids in rural areas don't learn any Portuguese until they arrive at the first grade in school. For this reason, 1-3 years of preschool education is a critical opportunity for kids to learn some Portuguese and get a head start by the time they reach primary school.

Of course, we also ensure that kids have plenty of time for play, developing other socio-emotional skills that will have lasting benefits. Investing in early childhood education is a long-term investment, but it really pay off. Thank you for supporting this work!
