Summary

PRC is one of only a few diagnostic centers in the region that provides timely testing to newborns who have been identified to have hearing loss. Early diagnosis and intervention is critical to a child's development. In many cases, children from marginalized communities are lost to follow up care. We strive to provide services to infants and toddlers regardless of their families ability to pay.

Challenge

In Washington, DC over 80% of infants identified through newborn screening do not receive follow-up intervention. In addition, few Diagnostic Centers for infants exist in the city and the wait times for testing can be as long as 6 months. Delaying intervention at a critical time in the development of an infant can have a long-term impact on literacy and language, leading to a cascade of developmental challenges. The impact to children from marginalized communities is even greater.

Solution

PRC is an Infant Diagnostic Center, has clinical expertise serving infants, and offers a range of services and support programs to help families understand the options for their child, helping them achieve the best outcomes. For families unable to travel to our clinic, we would like to be able to offer mobile screenings and testing in underserved communities. PRC's testing and therapies are offered regardless of a family's ability to pay.

Long-Term Impact

For infants and toddlers to benefit fully from early identification and hearing technology, it is crucial that they receive timely, intense and high-quality intervention. PRC works with families to provide a continuum of care as the child develops. With intensive therapeutic supports, children with hearing loss can achieve age-appropriate speech and language skills and achieve academically and socially. PRC's goal is to help all children with hearing loss reach their full potential.
