In the last three months, weather has been a significant challenge for our early stimulation program. The rainy season has been particularly rainy this year and has made it difficult for children and their families to travel to Adisa for early intervention therapy. Even more, the wet weather caused many children to get sick. Because of this, we were not able to complete as many sessions as in the previous three months. Given this challenge, our early intervention team had to adjust its strategy to continue working with these kids. One way that we did this was by focusing more energy towards training the parents of these children so that they can work with their kids from home.
Although Adisa therapists have made great progress working directly with children each week, it is equally important that the parents of these children are able to follow up on these visits with regular homework and activities to continue the development of their children. To this end, parents attend monthly training workshops in Adisa to provide them with teaching tools and homework to aid in the development of their child. By training the parents of these children to work with them from home, we have seen kids make substantial progress. Children have improved in social-emotional development, communication and language skills, learning approaches, motor activities and sensory skills. One little girl, Dolores, is an inspiring example of the progress that can be made through early intervention therapy.
Her story:
Dolores is 5 years old and lives with her father, mother and brother in Santiago Atitlán. She was born with spina bifida, a birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly. In February of this year, she entered our early intervention program because of developmental delays in her motor functions. With the help of Adisa’s physical therapists and the support of her family, she has started to crawl! Her mother is now considering enrolling her in regular school due to her tremendous progress in therapy. It is successes such as Dolores’ that propel Adisa forward. With our donor’s support, we can continue to support these children and strive for an inclusive community for everyone!
