Umva Dye Project is Back and Growing!

Umva dyers gathering native plants for dye making
Umva dyers gathering native plants for dye making

Our Umva dyers are back in full swing, creating gorgeous botanical prints on wool, silk and cotton scarves and wraps. Since the Umva project was launched in 2015 we have had two women dyeing fabric in a small space behind their home, having to haul water to do so. Our founder Nancy and another board member, Jennifer Paone (who took this beautiful photograph) were finally able to go back to Rwanda in April of this year. While there, Nancy trained three more women to join the effort - a major step forward!

Another goal of the trip was to identify a new work space in Musanze where all five dyers can work together and not have to haul water. We are thrilled to have secured space within Musanze Art Studio Hub Adventure (MASHA) where Rwandan artists and craftspeople create, display, and sell their work. All five women (with a plan for more dyers in the future) will be able to perform the dye work on site together with ease and also offer great exposure for buyers to come meet them and purchase finished pieces. The new location will create visibility for the Umva Project within the local community and further afield in Rwanda. Preparations of the space are slated to begin in early 2023.
