This project will be focusing on educating communities on the need to eradicate female genital mutilation in ikom & boki of cross river state. it will rescue 200 girls from 25 communities in an alternative rite of passage ceremony without the cut. through advocacy, open community dialogue/sensitization, and media awareness it will educate girls and boys about life skills, sexuality education, HIV, offer empowerment vocational training and seed grant to rural women.
There is a law Prohibiting early marriage and female circumcision in cross river state with 18 L.G.As and 554 communities. FC is practiced in 16 of the L.G.As; It is a practice for parents to take their young girls of 12 -17 years who are ''coming of age '' to circumcise using instruments, reused without cleaning, anesthetics and antiseptics are not generally used and girls bleeding excessively result in death. for survivals, either got wedded or become a teenage mother. without husband
SDI provides a community based sexual & reproductive health and human right education awareness in rural areas. Through advocacy, mobilization, media campaign, education materials and dialogue communities are sensitized on how to end child marriage, teen pregnancy, FC and spread of HIV. Offer vocational training and seed grant to women. educate girls and boys on life skills, sexuality education, hazards of FC in an alternative rite of passage ceremony and public declaration by communities
The project will free 25 villages and 200 girls from female circumcision practice. Improve access to knowledge of 50 women about their values and importance of their rights and societal roles. It will promote behavior change; encourage a woman's wellness to actively make decisions in her family and community, apply knowledge to maintain physical and psychological wellness to form or join women's community groups and take advantage of economic opportunities
