Through this project, ACDI-CG will build a 48 m3 reservoir for storing drinking water and 10 additional standpipes to ensure access to water for 1,047 families (6,258 vulnerable people) for their social stability in 12 disaster-stricken villages in the Budaha group in the Burhinyi chiefdom, Mwenga territory, South Kivu province in the DR Congo.
The lives of 1047 families are in danger in 12 villages of Budaha located at the terminus of the Cigane water network. While fetching water from streams and rivers and while washing clothes, women, children and girls are often victims of physical and sexual violence, physical injuries. These contaminated waters cause waterborne diseases and infections. The lack causes the loss of small vegetable fields.
This project will ensure access to local water for 1,047 families. ACDI-CG will acquire the materials (cement, sand, gravel, rebar, stones, etc.) and equipment needed (pipes, valves, taps, plumbing accessories, farming tools, etc.) to build a 48m3 reservoir, 10 standpipes, 6 public laundry stations, train 12 members of the water management committee, equip this committee, and pay the costs of installing the works.
Drinking water will protect 6,258 people from 1,047 families from violence (physical, sexual) encountered while searching for drinking water far from villages when washing clothes in unsafe rivers. Waterborne diseases, mental disorders and domestic violence related to lack of drinking water will be eradicated. Family nutrition will be improved through sustainable production of vegetables in gardens following watering.
