Your donation will fund nurse training for 30 women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, transforming their lives and saving the lives of countless others. Training female nurses creates lifelong opportunities for women; empowering them to lift themselves and their families out of the cycle of poverty. ISSI, our partner in DRC, is recognised as the best nursing school in the country. Help ISSI train more women to become highly skilled nurses and transform the landscape of healthcare in DRC.
In the DRC, there is just 1 doctor and 4 nurses for every 10,000 people. These aren't just stats; this is the reality of people's lives. In a nation where 75% of children die before reaching the age of 5, a well-trained nurse is the difference between life and death. The healthcare system in DRC is drastically underfunded. There is a lack of medical infrastructure, resources and equipment. However, this is not important if there aren't well-trained nurses to offer care and supervise treatment.
With over 70% of the population living in extreme poverty, most ISSI students require a scholarship. These scholarships give women with fewer opportunities the chance to pursue their dreams and a professional career. Educating women to access well-paid jobs means increased gender equality through economic empowerment, and a way to create a cycle of prosperity for future generations. ISSI graduates are not only empowered through their training but also save an estimated 100 lives a week.
We work with ISSI to create locally-led and tailored solutions. Educating women to become nurses helps to lift them and their families out of the cycle of poverty by giving them lifelong opportunities. ISSI is not only empowering these women but has also given prestige to the nursing profession in DRC. ISSI graduates are so appreciated by hospitals that they have raised the average salary of nurses by 200% in the last 20 years. This project supports the training of a class of 30 nurses at ISSI.
