December 25th was a happy day - the first of 3 calves were born at the Live and Lear in Kenya Education Center in Nakuru to celebrate Christmas. Within the next 2 weeks the other two calves were born. Two girls and a boy :) Everyone was elated and recently the milk began to flow for the children as well as for the calves. It's a great learning experience for the children to see how the calves grow up - and see how the milk is shared with them. We now have 4 cows and 3 calves and the cowshed is full!
Now, if only we could buy that land close by to grow crops for and with the children! The parents are willing to do most of the work of planting, weeding and harvesting..
Asante sana - thank you to the wonderful donors who have helped to get us started with this project. We still have a long way to go...

Wispy Works Wonders

Wispy the Fuel Producing Cow
Wispy was the last of the 3 cows that were donated to the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center in Nakuru. And Wispy and her 2 cow friends have a calf to look after now after she was sold to the Center for very little money. We were able to use the Global Giving funding for her - Her name will of course be GG.
The cows are already making a difference at the Center. Although the 3 grown cows are all pregnant and not yeat able to give milk until December - January, the have another job to do at the Center. We have installed a home gas installation which produces cooking gas with... cow dung! The warmth coming from the installation makes it the perfect place to plant strawberries on top and green vegetables around it. So the children are learning to use what the cows have to offer - besides milk!
Now that the cowshed has been built and is housing 4 cows, one of the next steps will be the chicken coop and chickens - but it will be necessary to buy farm land first.
We can really use your kind support to make this happen and keep those smiles on the chilren's faces.
Asante sana - thank you so much!

Cows a Mooing and Milk is Flowing...

Elisabeth, Riziki and Whispy in their new cowshed
It was wonderful to experience the generosity of the wonderful people who spontaneously donated to buy three cows. Elisabeth, Riziki and Whispy moved into the new cowshed that was mainly paid for through donation from GlobalGiving. It is a joy to see how the Elisabeth and Riziki, who were pretty skinny cows, are growing bigger and healthier every day. So, now that the children are seeing for themselves how to care for the cows, we would like to buy the neighboring plot of farm land to enable us to plant and harvest more beans and vegetables for the children - and also give us room to build a good-sized chicken coop so that we can also raise chickens for eggs and meat. We have come a long way in the past couple of months - with your help we'll reach our goals!
Asante sana - thank you so much!
