Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is a pioneer to conduct community-based mangrove conservation and restoration. We realized that education is the key tool to involve the people with conservation. So, BEDS is establishing The Sundarbans Mangrove Center (SMC) in near the Mangrove forest. This centre will serves as a knowledge hub for researchers, students, mangrove practitioners, local communities. So, support us to conduct this Coastal Education Program.
Sundarbans coastal people are facing a very tough situation. They had been already affected by loss of jobs, bad economy, and being unable to move around because of the Covid-19. On May 20, 2020, the cyclone "Amphan" hit the Sundarbans area, and 500+ people have lost their homes and have taken shelter in our center. They are not able to afford their food due to no way to work, and cyclone has made a pretty bad damage to the area. Their livelihood has come under question and they are worried.
Through this proposed project, support will be provided to the affected people to meet up their fundamental needs (food, cloth, safety kits etc) beside their rehabilitation (house repairing, seed for agriculture, fishing net and boat). With our support the affected people will settle down and again start their work towards livelihood. This project will not only provide the affected people with emergency support, but also help them to begin their life again with new energy and enthusiasm.
This proposed project will help the affected people to return in their regular life, without getting depressed. As the coastal people are key stakeholders of nature conservation, this project will help us to conserve the nature together with local people. If they are not supported, antisocial activities may increase in society and massive destruction of natural resource may occur by the affected community. So, this project will establish peaceful co-existence between humans and nature.
