Dear friends,

Thank you so much for supporting Eden Social Welfare Foundation on GlobalGiving! After finishing our wheelchair donation project in Vietnam, we continued the next project to help persons with visual impairments in Inner Mongolia. In June, we chose Horqin District in Tongliao City where there are more than 100,000 persons with visual impairments as our target area in Inner Mongolia for our GlobalGiving project. We originally planned to donate white canes in order to increase their independence and mobility. But after the assessment and discussion with local people, we decided to donate 100 Birdy assistive devices to help the visually impaired make their lives more convenient.

What is Birdy assistive device? Why we made this adjustment? Firstly, the rate of using white canes in China is pretty low. White canes are generally used in big city where accessible facilities or public transportation are available. People with visual impairments in rural areas are usually led by people or take cars when they move from one place to another. So we started thinking about the alternative— Birdy. Birdy is a small and lightweight assistive device which has multiple functions such as radio, alarm clock, digital voice recorders, speaking clock, and countdown timer and which is designed by the Taiwanese visually impaired technicians who understands the needs of individuals with visual impairments. The price of one Birdy assistive device is equivalent to one white cane. After the assessment and direct discussion with local visually impaired, we found that Birdy can make their lives more convenient and provide great assistance during work.

According to our research, there is more than 95% of the visually impaired work as massagists in Horqin District of Tongliao City. Birdy can be very helpful in their workplace. Many donation receivers told us that they are so happy to have Birdy, because this is going to help them a lot during work. “Birdy is an amazing device. From now on, I will be able to know the time when I provide massage services to customers. The countdown timer function will remind me how long I still have during One-Hour Massage session. Birdy can also provide me event/date reminder, so I will not be worried about forgetting important appointments anymore!" said Mr. Wu, who is a visually impaired for 35 years and currently working as a massagist in Tongliao City. You can’t imagine how this small device can bring convenience and joy in their lives. Donating assistive devices is not only about the number of people who receive the donation, it’s also about the impact that the assistive devices can bring and make receivers’ lives better!

Since last year, our assistive devices donation project has directly help 187 persons with disabilities, as well as their families. We really cannot do this without your donation, your suggestions, and your supports in different ways! We are planning to go to different districts/ cities in Inner Mongolia again next year in order to reach more people who are waiting for this small assistive device to change their lives. Do you want to join us? It’s never too late to join us! We will stay (hidden but active) on GlobalGiving platform if we can receive at least one donation each month. If we can raise USD$5,000 in total by the end of this year, we can be visible on this platform and you can keep supporting our upcoming Love Without Borders Projects. With you, everything is possible!

Dear friends,

Thank you again for keeping supporting us on GlobalGiving! Last year, we have donated 37 manual tricycle wheelchairs to the persons with disabilities and improved more than 37 families’ living situation in Vietnam. During these past three months, we have continued our partnership with Kien Cuong Factory and purchased another 50 standard wheelchairs to help more persons with disabilities in Vietnam. Thank you so much for your donations to make it happened!

On the March 20th, we donated 50 standard wheelchairs to 50 individuals  with disabilities in Vietnam. Wheelchair receivers told us that they are so happy to have assistive devices to help them go out of their houses. We see the excitement and hope in their eyes when they are learning to use the wheelchairs. This could be a turning point of their lives. Using wheelchairs means that they don’t need to be confined in their houses and their bodies, they get a chance to explore their communities and the world.

The owner of our partner Kien Cuong Factory also thanks us for giving his employees with disabilities this opportunity. The order we placed this time is larger than last time but they finished it in time. Workers with disabilities in his factory feel a sense of accomplishment. They not only earn the salaries by themselves but also make something that can help others who are facing the similar challenges.

We have helped almost 100 families in Vietnam. We are now preparing to move to the next stage of our projectdonating white canes to Inner Mongolia in this coming month. Our staff in Visual Impairments Service Division has already prepared 100 white canes. White cane is the most common mobility aid for the visually impaired. It provides certain level of safety, mobility, and independence to persons with visual impairments. It can also help them recognize the world around them. We are excited to bring hope and lights to those who have been living in the dark for most of their lives. Do you feel the same excitement of helping and changing someone’s life? What do you think about this project? Do you want to join us? Please keep supporting us on GlobalGiving!

Dear friends,

Thank you for supporting our project! We have donated 37 manual tricycle wheelchairs to the persons with disabilities and indirectly improved 37 families’ living situation in Vietnam after GlobalGiving’s Open Challenge.

We have worked with HCMC Association for the Support of People with Disabilities and Orphans, a local NGO and our partnering organization in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, to help us identify persons with disabilities who need wheelchairs to improve their current living situation. On the beautiful morning of December 31st, 2014, HCMC Association for the Support of People with Disabilities and Orphans held the Wheelchair Donation Ceremony. The wheelchair receivers were excited about their new wheelchairs, and we were so happy to see that they were going to start their new lives! Because of new wheelchairs, the disabled can find jobs or go back to schools, which will help them become more independent, and then improve the economic situation of the whole family. (Watch Wheelchair Donation Ceremony video)

These 37 manual tricycle wheelchairs are produced by local wheelchair manufacturer-Kien Cuong Factory. The owner of the factory has a physical disability and he provides employment opportunity to the employees with disabilities. This project helps not only the wheelchair receivers but also disabled employees in the wheelchair factory. We will continue our partnership with Kien Cuong Factory to purchase more 50 standard wheelchairs and help more persons with disabilities in Vietnam (More pictures about the factory).

Donate one wheelchair can help more than one family, does that sound great? Thank you so much for supporting us and working with us to change someone's life! Please share our project link with your friends and continue supporting us on GlobalGiving!
