This project will provide educational kits, including school bags, notebooks, stationery, and essential supplies, to 150 Roma children (including Dom and Abdal) in Antakya affected by the earthquake, helping reduce dropout risk and ensuring children can attend class prepared. $25-$100 supports one student: $500 supports five.
After the Hatay earthquake, the Dom, Roma, and Abdal families in Antakya's container cities, including Buyukdalyan, face ongoing poverty, displacement, and exclusion. Many children lack basic school supplies, such as bags, notebooks, and stationery, which makes regular attendance difficult. When families must prioritize food and shelter, school needs become unaffordable, increasing absenteeism and dropout risk this school year.
This project will remove a key barrier to education for children from Dom, Roma, and Abdal communities in Antakya's container settlements by providing immediate, practical support. We will distribute education kits to 150 students, including a school bag, notebooks, stationery, and essential supplies. By covering these basics, we reduce the financial burden on families, help children attend school regularly and be prepared, and lower absenteeism and dropout risk.
In Turkey, consistent education support is one of the most effective ways to prevent dropout for economically disadvantaged students. Programs such as the Roma Education Fund's scholarships show that sustained support helps students stay in school and reach higher education, breaking cycles of poverty and exclusion. By keeping children enrolled now through basic school kits, this project protects their future learning pathways and long-term opportunities.
