Dear Friends,

I am honored to share with you that Alliance Magazine has published my article, “Rethinking Refugees, Through the Eyes of a Darfuri Woman.”

In this piece, I reflect on my own journey of genocide, displacement, refugees, and resilience and how too often the global narrative frames refugees only as passive victims. At Darfur Women Network (DWN), we know this is far from the truth. Refugees are active responders, creators, and changemakers who build strength, care for their families, and shape their communities every single day.

This recognition is not only my story—it is our collective story together. Through your generosity, DWN continues to provide:

Safe stoves to protect women from violence and reduce harmful smoke.
Clean water containers to preserve health and dignity in refugee camps.
Economic empowerment programs so women can earn an income and support their children.
Life-saving Assistance Services to hundred thousands of displaced, injured civilians in sieged city of El Fasher, N. Darfur, Sudan.
Cross-Cultural Events to provide an opportunity for immigrants and Americans to learn and share cultures.

Today, the crisis in Sudan has displaced more than 12 million people. The need for awareness, solidarity, and action has never been greater. By amplifying refugee voices and supporting community-led solutions, we can bring both immediate relief and lasting resilience.

Sudan Emergency Final Grant Report

Final Report Summary – Sudan Emergency Fund Grant

Project Title: Life-Saving Assistance for Displaced Civilians
Grant Amount: $7,500
Date Received: March 26, 2025
Implementing Organization: Darfur Women Network (DWN)
Location: El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan
Total Beneficiaries Reached: 9,895 individuals

Key Impacts Achieved

Provided over 9,000 hot meals through emergency community kitchens to displaced civilians from Zamzam Camp—supporting children, elders, injured civilians, and families with dignity and nourishment.
Rescued 50 individuals who walked over 10 days through forests to escape RSF sieges. DWN funded their transport to reach safety in Chad.
Offered support to trauma survivors, including displaced DWN-trained soap-makers and volunteers who fled violence in South Darfur.
Provided essential food and care to injured civilians, including those harmed in drone strikes while gathering food or farming.
Maintained safe cooking operations during brief pauses in drone or ground attacks, offering meals when survival was most at risk.

Context & Crisis

In April 2025, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a brutal and systematic assault on Zamzam Camp, killing over 1,200 civilians, including 9 medical workers, two DWN volunteers, and a dedicated local doctor, Dr. Hanadi. The entire camp was burned to the ground.

Survivors fled to El Fasher, only to face:

Constant aerial drone and ground assaults (over 300 drone strikes daily)
Famine, severe malnutrition, and a complete market collapse
Prices 5–15 times higher than surrounding regions (e.g., soap costing 15x more)
No access to food, water, shelter, or medical aid—families sleeping under trees

DWN’s Lifesaving Response

In the absence of large humanitarian organizations, Darfur Women Network stepped forward to serve where others could not.

Despite the collapse of the financial system, DWN continued operations using Bankak, Sudan’s only functioning digital payment system, allowing us to deliver aid directly, swiftly, and safely under siege conditions.

Meals provided included:

Millet with milk
Rice with meat (until it ran out due to soaring prices)
Traditional Darfuri meals like Aseeda and Adasia
One hot meal per day, cooked cautiously when attacks paused
